Writing Content That Targets Your Keywords

It's now time to sit down and start writing quality content for our keywords! It's best to start writing content that is a sub-page of your site. That is, you should spend your time writing content that does NOT appear on the homepage. A mistake that's easy to make is to start writing your homepage content before having a clue what your sub-page content will be. The importance of writing sub-page content before home page content will become apparent later on when we discuss "internal linking" (in part 2 of this 4 part guide). For now, try to take our word on it. You'll be saving yourself a lot of re-writing content if you ignore the homepage for now.

The keyword phrase we're targeting for our fictional site is "student loan consolidation", so that's where we're going to begin writing our content. As we write our content we're going to establish classic on-page SEO techniques that will make search engine spiders giddy!

Let's start off by writing the actual content (copy, as it's known in the world of marketing) that will make up the majority of the page. At this point we're only concerned with the content, so don't worry about formatting and headers and such. Your content should be a minimum of 250 words (preferably) and focus solely on the topic at hand (the keyword phrase). For our example, our content could discuss the various student loan consolidation programs available and the pros and cons of each, or we could write about how student loan consolidation options are increasing and the steps a user needs to take in order to apply for one. The important thing is the content is written around the keyword phrase in a manner that makes sense.

Don't expect to whip together some content in a few minutes. You'll need to spend as much time as possible writing very concise and intelligent content that will compel potential visitors to read your material from beginning to end. Remember, content is what's going to make you your money so don't ignore its importance!

One more thing before we move on that has to be mentioned, please run your content through a spell-check program! Nothing kills credibility more than website content laden with spelling errors. Next we'll discuss how to apply SEO to your content within a webpage.
